Germantown Arts presents "Celebrate Nina," a one day, multi-location festival in Germantown focused on the life and music of Nina Simone. Planned events include:
-a screening of the documentary, "What Happened, Miss Simone"
-a panel discussion of Nina Simone's life and work, through a cultural and historical context with hand picked experts who will speak
-a VIP event with a reception and live performance of Nina Simone's music with piano and voice at the only Black Writer's Museum in the United States
-a cider and kombucha garden at the historic Wyck House, with a performance by DJ Rich Medina of contemporary music that has utilized Nina Simone's music via sampling
-an evening performance of "Dear Nina" by Rootstock Republic, a 7 piece string ensemble performing original arrangements of Nina Simone's music. The performance will take place at Rittenhouse Soundworks. The string section will be complimented by alumni of the Curtis Institute of music, to acknowledge the connection of Miss Simone famously being denied admittance to that institution.
